A dream start for HC Landsberg to the new ice hockey season: in front of 2,000 spectators, they secured a 6–4 home victory against the Schweinfurt Mighty Dogs.
The Riverkings were honoured to host this year's official opening match of the Ice Hockey Bayernliga and, to mark the occasion, organised a celebration for fans of all clubs outside the Landsberg ice rink several hours before the game. On the ice, in front of 2,000 spectators (more than ever before at a season opener), the crowd was treated to a fast-paced, high-quality and, at times, dramatic match lasting a good two hours.
After Wagner had put Landsberg ahead early on and Heckenberger had equalised for Schweinfurt, the puck found the back of the visitors' net three times between the 14th and 16th minutes, prompting the visiting goalkeeper to make way for his substitute. Until the middle of the second period, the Riverkings valiantly defended their surprise 4–1 lead against the championship favourites. However, during a brief spell of weakness, the Mighty Dogs managed to equalise at 4–4 within three minutes.
In a closely contested final period, Erdt then put the HCL back in front at 5–4. Despite being two men down, Freidenfels scored an empty-net goal in the final second of the match to seal a frenetically celebrated 6–4 victory.
